Mental Health Misconceptions
I was recently in a situation where I was explaining to someone that I have a mental illness. His response was, “That’s what happens when something really bad happens in your life, isn’t it?”
At first, I was surprised by the question, as I assumed that most people were aware by now of the numerous causes of mental health conditions. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that false ideas like this one are still pervasive in most people’s notions about the topic. Stereotypes from the media and outdated myths seem to simply be more memorable than the facts. That being said, here are some of the more common myths about mental illness:
